MARKET OVERVIEW
The data centre industry in Denmark is maturing, particularly in Copenhagen, the country's primary financial hub. This growth is primarily fueled by increased usage of cloud services, access to renewable power and Denmark’s strategic position within the Nordics. 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data applications, as well as a growing emphasis on renewable energy investments are stimulating the market, not just in Copenhagen, but in other Danish locations. In Copenhagen, there is a substantial increase in the construction of new data centres, with major hyperscale providers making significant investments. Additionally, Denmark offers incentives like tax benefits within its free trade zone, such as the Freeport of Copenhagen, which further encourages industrial and enterprise investments in the region. The DC market is also witnessing innovation in cooling technologies. In Feb 2023, GlobalConnect became the first colocation operator in Europe to offer its clients an immersion cooling technique that reduces data centre cooling power consumption by up to 90%. The Denmark data centre industry is characterized by a steadfast commitment to sustainability. With a keen awareness of environmental concerns, data centres in Denmark are leading the way in adopting eco-friendly practices. In May 2023, Penta Infra completed its Copenhagen facility expansion, the site connects to a district heating scheme, covering the heating needs of 1,500 households.
ECOSYSTEM DEVELOPMENTS • Prime Data Centers is planning a 124MW campus in Saeby. The campus will consist of three buildings across 40,500 sqm. The 27-acre development at Energrivej will be Prime’s first foray into the Denmark market. • Penta Infra completed the expansion of their Glostrup data centre in May 2023. The expansion provides the facility with 2MW of capacity while also adding the ability to redistribute heat to local district networks. Penta began its entry to the Copenhagen market when it acquired a data centre from Sentia in May 2021. • In March 2023, Colt Technology Services completed a new network route to connect Germany to the Nordics. The fiber route will run through Germany, Denmark (Copenhagen), Norway, and Sweden. • DE-CIX has added two new interconnection exchanges to Bulk Infrastructure and Digital Realty’s facilities in the Copenhagen market. • atNorth announced plans for a new data centre in Copenhagen this month. The first phase of the project is expected to deliver in 2024 with room for further expansion. At full build-out, the facility is expected to reach 30MW of IT capacity. Like several other new data centres, the facility will have the ability to redistribute waste heat to power nearby households. atNorth has developed eight prior facilities throughout the Nordics. • In September 2023, Capman , a Finnish investment company, announced it had purchased Fuzion, a colocation data centre company. Fuzion has four data centres in Denmark and is expanding to Copenhagen.
