PREPARING FOR DAY ONE

Restrooms Restroom use and adaptation will present particular challenges given code requirements, as well as sizing constraints. Apart from immediate adaptation of disinfection technologies, guidelines for social distancing will need careful planning. New York City restrooms are typically smaller in older buildings. The number of people entering and using the restrooms at the same time will be constrained. As examples show below, no more than two people will likely be able to use and access the restroom simultaneously given the layout. In addition, sinks may need to be blocked from use to ensure distancing between washers.

• Consider no-touch appliances such as faucets, soap dispensers and paper towel dispensers • Consider options for hands free door openers, such as “foot pulls” • Place waste bin near exit doors and outside of restrooms to accommodate easy disposal of paper towels • Water fountains may also need to be blocked off for use in the short-term Vertical Transportation In light of COVID-19 and the impact it is having on business operations, building owners/ managers have been forced to consider a reduced service on Vertical Transportation (VT) equipment or a complete shut down in some cases. • Equipment should continue to receive its monthly ‘exercise’ and maintenance. This will make the process of return to service much quicker and easier. • If elevators/escalators have been placed out of service or not used for longer than 14 days, consult with an elevator contractor or technician to determine what checks/maintenance should be performed prior to placing units back in operation. To plan for the quick and efficient transfer of occupants from the lobby to their floor, consider having the elevator maintenance company set the dispatchers to “home” at the lobby. While the standard dispatcher setting is to have elevators scattered among the bank for better performance, they can be set to all automatically go to the lobby after each trip. Performance will be impacted slightly, but it will result in decreased crowding in the lobby.
