PREPARING FOR DAY ONE

II. Preparing the Building

Before occupants return to a building that has been vacated for a significant period, building owners, managers and operators should complete a variety of pre-return checks, tasks, and assessments to ensure a healthy and safe environment. We recommend referencing any existing building risk assessments or registers which can provide a better understanding of what building systems are critical to assess prior to reoccupation. Not all the items below will be applicable for every building. Rather, owners, operators and building managers must refer to building-specific protocol to prepare for the workforce to return. ENSURE SAFETY OF WORKERS PREPARING THE BUILDING Anyone preparing a building/space after a period of reduced inactivity due to COVID-19 should be provided with: • Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as masks, gloves, eye protection and coveralls before entering a building. This PPE equipment should help protect workers against mold and other contaminants that may have been introduced during the inactive period. • Training in fitting, wearing, and using PPE as well as safe removal, sanitizing and disposal • Workers should dispose of single-use PPE after one use in the following manner: • After removing PPE, staff should wash their hands immediately, adhering to World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations • Follow all pre-existing safety practices, referring to existing regulatory requirements, policies, procedures and risk assessments • Ladder/working at height • Lone worker policies • Job safety plans Building Personnel • All property/facility employees are to be tasked with maintaining necessary distance from each other and when interacting with tenants and contractors per CDC guidelines • Review building/space reopening occupancy plans and adjust staff schedules accordingly • Review checklist and confirm self-performed or outsourced services and confirm adequate staffing and vendor commitment • Review additional staffing needs, as needed and based on changes in processes and procedures (janitorial, engineering, security, etc.) • Train all building personnel on new access policies promoting distancing related to COVID-19 • Provide new access policy to security and, if applicable, to reception third-party vendors • Notify security and reception third-party vendors of new policy and advise on training date to run through process prior to opening • Develop plan to address any staffing or third-party vendor disparity • Implement staggered staff schedules (hours, shifts, and days worked). Ex., staggered start times or alternating days/weeks for maintenance staff • Consider altering specified tasks, work areas, and seating assignments for employees to ensure minimum work distances being adhered to by staff • Limit in-person meetings with third-party contractors • Ensure that there is adequate supply of PPE, such as gloves, face masks, face shields for
