3. SPACE MANAGEMENT, WORKPLACE EFFECTIVENESS AND SUPPORT FOR AGILE WORKING There is strong (and still growing) evidence that a supportive, healthy and flexible workplace drives productivity, staff retention and profitability. Smart Building technologies not only help you assess and improve the effectiveness of your current workspace, but also support you to continue to fine-tune workplace concepts. Organizations increasingly are moving from assigned seating to activity-based working (ABW) in an environment that provides suitable spaces for various activities. Through implementing ABW, organizations can use available space more effectively while at the same time supporting people to perform at their best. to determine how much space your office really needs to support its staff’s activities. This data can be correlated with comfort data to generate further insights and enable you to create a comfortable, engaging and productive workplace. A good IoT platform provides the tools to visualize all this data on floor plans, heat maps and KPI dashboards. Occupancy sensor data on desks, open spaces and closed rooms allows you

Before any IoT deployment, CREs should take a step back from the technology and identify the scenarios that will create the most value for their people and organizations. This implies translating company-wide objectives into real estate and workplace goals and defining KPIs to monitor performance. Examples are optimizing worker productivity, reducing vacancy, realizing energy savings, and right-sizing services. Such an analysis, preferably using a standardized approach, will also clarify the data requirements, which in turn will guide technology and sensor choices. There are hundreds of possible scenarios - and the list keeps growing! Workplace leaders should prioritize the use cases that solve their organization’s biggest pain points and provide the greatest improvement potential.

CRE professionals may have existing connected things that they have already installed or piloted along with building information systems and business process technologies which need to be identified in order to eliminate duplication and eliminate additional costs. Many times a significant amount of information is already available for mining. For example, more data will be created during 2017 than during the previous 5,000 years². To ensure a successful project, make sure you have the basics covered and have good visibility into assets, spaces and leases. Perform space analytics and benchmark building ratios. Import spatial data from CAD or BIM as a basis for an accurate inventory (this can also serve to overlay floor plans with sensor- generated data and applications).
