ED’S SUMMER COMPANIONS Common L oon

I am a member of the Garnet Hill Property Owners Association. We are stewards of 650 acres that include pristine woods that abut Thirteenth Lake in the Adirondacks. Thirteenth Lake falls within the New York State designated 114,000- acre Siamese Ponds Wilderness Area of the Adirondack Forest Preserve.

Each spring we welcome back the loons for another season on Thirteenth Lake, and we listen for their calls across the lake. Many kayak trips are highlighted by paddling parallel to these seasonal visitors. A few years ago, GHPOA was instrumental in eliminating gas motors from the lake, allowing the lake to remain a pristine home to these loons. It’s not summer until you hear their calls echo across the lake.
