• Austin, with its strong focus on technology and innovation, has naturally fostered a partnership with the growing life sciences sector. The city’s creative and entrepreneurial environment is a magnet for collaboration between tech companies, research institutions, talent and funding sources. • Austin’s life sciences industry has evolved into a well -rounded segment, with over 300 companies in the region and a workforce of nearly 21,000. There is a primary focus on the highest growth segments and research areas, which include biologics, medical devices, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals and contract research. • With more than 20 area colleges, universities and institutions providing life sciences and healthcare-related programs, Austin boasts one of the most educated populations in the United States. The University of Texas at Austin, a Tier 1 research university, is the most notable with its highly ranked College of Pharmacy. More than half of UT's research is dedicated to life sciences. • The Austin Innovation District, anchored by UT Austin, Dell Medical School and the Dell Seton Medical Center, will be an epicenter for life sciences research and development for both existing and startup biotech companies. • Menlo Park-based BillionToOne, a next-generation molecular diagnostics company, recently announced plans to expand to Austin, adding an estimated 1,000 jobs. This move strengthens Austin's growing life sciences sector and reinforces the city's status as a hub for innovation.
