WORK-LIFE BALANCE?

I can be on the road for weeks at a time, so dinner time at home is sacred. We have a rule at my house: no phones or electronic devices at the dinner table. Effectively managing a successful career and parenting four children has the potential for a chemistry project gone wrong….explosive! A schedule is a must in my world but I always leave room for spontaneity. Life is crazy. My life is crazy. But, I truly love it and feel I’m at my best when juggling multiple things: soccer games, school dances, doctor appointments, proposals, client dinners, etc. I realize I cannot truly “do it all,” but I’m motivated every day to try. I live by these words from the novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery: ”Tomorrow is always new with no mistakes in it.” MISSY QUINN Philadelphia City Lead, Asset Services

Work-life balance was a struggle for me earlier in my career. I’ve gotten better as I finally realized the importance of a healthy balance between work and home. With a daughter who just turned 13, I remind myself all the time how fast my kids are growing up. I don’t want to wake up one day and realize that they are out of the house and have any regrets of time spent as a family. I have come to believe there is no work-life balance, particularly in today’s hyper-connected world. There is simply a lot of “out of balance,” which can tilt one way or the other as priorities shift day to day. We end up serving many masters, which is fine if we’re able to exercise disciplined truly enjoy and be fully present when engaged in life’s various priorities. Vocation is a critical part of that mix because, to do it well, it takes a huge amount of time. Love your job; love engaging with your colleagues and clients; love doing something special at work. When those things happen, then the daily tug-of-war between priorities is an acceptable, energizing challenge. time management. The key to me is to
