L ABORATORY S AFETY P ROGRAM
Non-ionizing radiation will heat tissue and can cause severe burns. If there is non-ionizing radiation present do not enter the lab until it is cleared by the lab owner and testing equipment verifies that potential exposures to non-ionizing radiation are at or below acceptable levels. Seek guidance from the customer or Corporate HSSE.
6.3.3 Biological Hazards
6.3.3.1 Laboratories may contain any or all of the following biological hazards:
Micro-organisms and their toxins are viruses, bacteria, and fungi. They can cause infection, exposure and allergies. Arthropod or bites and stings from insects that can cause inflammation, transmission of infections, and allergic response. Allergens and toxins from plants that can cause dermatitis or asthma. Protein allergens from animals such as urine, feces, hair, saliva, and dander. Pathogens, such as hepatitis, tuberculosis, or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). 6.3.3.2 If these biological hazards are present obtain written clearance from the lab owner prior to entering the lab. Seek guidance from the customer or Corporate HSSE. Safe Work Practices 6.4.1 Use of Respirators and PPE 6.4.1.1 Where the use of respirators is necessary to maintain exposure below permissible exposure limits, employees are provided with the proper respiratory equipment. Use of respirators must meet the requirements of the Respiratory Protection Program. 6.4.1.2 PPE is used in accordance with the CHP and the Personal Protective Equipment Program. Please refer specifically to information regarding minimum PPE to be worn in various work areas. 6.4.2 Safe Work Practices for Routine Hazards 6.4.2.1 The following precautions or practices should be utilized to mitigate routine hazards: Always get authorization to enter a lab from the lab owner. Never underestimate the risk of entering a lab. Be aware of electrical shock hazards that may be associated with experiments in a lab.
